PCP congratulates Filipino lensman for World Press Photo win

World Press Photo Awards 2017 - General News - Third Prize, Singles - Noel Celis, Agence France-Presse - Life Inside The Philippines' Most Overcrowded Jail

The Photojournalists’ Center of the Philippines extends it congratulations to Filipino photographer Noel Celis for winning the esteemed 2017 World Press Photo contest.

Celis, a photographer of the Agence France-Presse in Manila, won third prize in the category General News-Single for his photo of prisoners packed together at overcrowded Quezon City Jail.

Now on its 60th year, the WPP is recognized as the world’s prestigious competition for photojournalism and its awards are coveted by photographers across the world.

This year, 5,034 photographers from 125 different countries submitted around 80,400 images for the competition.

Only in December last year, Celis has also won the 2016 Prix Varenne Photo Award and the Pictures of the Year International for the same story about the country’s inhumane' prison conditions.

“The different recognition given to Mr. Noel Celis affirms the excellence of Filipino talent in the field of photojournalism and highlights the important role of photojournalists in conveying stories affecting our society that needs attention and solution” said Gigie Cruz, current Chairperson of the Photojournalists Center of the Philippines, Inc ( PCP, Inc.).

PCP, Inc., commends Celis, an alumnus of the 4th PCP Professional Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Workshop in 2004, for his unwavering commitment in advancing the field of photojournalism in the country.

The Photojournalists’ Center of the Philippines (PCP), Inc. is a duly registered non-profit and non-stock organization of working photojournalists established in 1997. It aims to help professionalize the practice of photojournalism in the country and it carries the central slogan: professionalism in photojournalism.

The annual workshop aims to raise the participants’ level of understanding of documentary photography and photojournalism trends and to enhance artistic and ethical practice of the profession.
